The Paying Guests

The Paying Guests - Sarah Waters I was so far into this book and wishing I could like the personality of the main character, Frances. Once a girl of spirit, beliefs and passion, she begins the book a dull, washed out spinster at twenty-seven, playing backgammon with her elderly mother, having let go of the one "true love" she felt she had had in her younger days. I should have much more enjoyed the story of war time Britain as a backdrop for Frances and Christine's love affair than this seven-year-later grab for a married woman who is lodging in Frances' home.

The story is written well, at least as far as I made it in this work, but endearing qualities of the main characters were lacking in my mind.
