I found Dahlquist's first book, [b:The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters|44930|The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters (Miss Temple, Doctor Svenson, and Cardinal Chang, #1)|Gordon Dahlquist|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1432992499s/44930.jpg|292054] in Germany of all places, surrounded as I was in a land where I understood 60% of what was said to me. I was deliriously lost in the style of this author, the wonderful characters and the bizarre, original story. I then was quite surprised years later to find a sequel to the first and bought the hardcover straightaway. I couldn't wait to jump back into the narrative.
This sequel was such a disappointment. The three main characters are always on the run, separated, getting out of impossible situations (almost all of the time) and the most interesting character becomes the Contessa. There was little to really enjoy in this story, which is quite a doorstop, and I found myself skimming constantly. This is a 1.5 star book for me and I am wondering how much i would like the first book if I reread it.
